Breakfast is one of my favourite meals of the day. What’s not to love? I’m always starving after the long night’s fast, bacon is one of my favourite things in the world, and breakfast usually doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. But choosing a great breakfast spot can sometimes be a battle. I’ve noticed I always go back to the same few places again and again and again. So here they are, in no particular order: my personal top Cape Town breakfast cafes.

Jarryds

There’s no denying that Jarryds serves up a wicked breakfast. Even though I find their Sea Point branch somewhat lacking in ambience – and certainly lacking in view – this is still one of my top choices when I need to meet people for breakfast or when I’m asked to recommend a breakfast spot. And the reason why is simple: It’s just so darn good. Their menu is incredible. Not only is breakfast served all day, but they also have everything you could possibly wish for!!! From fruits to oats, smoothie bowls, toasties, eggs, benedicts, omelettes, and some breakfast specialities, Jarryds really does have it all. I usually have something from their Benedict menu and swap out the toast for gorgeous hash browns – delicious!

The I Love Foodies Favourite Breakfast Price: R123 (for a streaky bacon benedict with hash browns)

Mantra

Mantra Cafe in Camps Bay offers you all the best views in the world. Clear glass windows (which are opened fully in summer) ensure that you have the most gorgeous unrestricted views of the Camps Bay strip and beach, adding that extra oomph to your breakfast experience. They have all the breakfast classics – and they do them well. The one downside to Mantra Cafe is that the space has terrible acoustics and can become overwhelmingly uncomfortable on a busy day. The I Love Foodies quick fix is to visit Mantra during the week or for very early breakfasts on weekends – so you get to enjoy the good food and great views without any of the negatives.

You’ll find them here: 43 Victoria Road, Camps Bay

Tashas

Tashas is absolutely gorgeous. They have numerous branches throughout Cape Town, but a firm favourite remains the one at the V&A Waterfront. Even though you can enjoy some ocean view and the calm nature of the V&A (on this side of the V&A, at least), it wouldn’t even matter because the cafe interior is so beautiful. Think light and bright colours, lots of gold, and lots of green. It’s a very comfortable space to sit in. Their breakfasts are great too, and they offer everything from breakfast classics to toasties and breakfast bowls. Price-wise, Tashas is slightly more expensive than the other cafes on this list so reserve them for your treat meal!

Arnolds

Arnolds is a Kloof Street favourite and anyone who has lived in Cape Town for a longer period of time will undoubtedly have had breakfast had Arnolds before. It may not be as fancy as the other cafes on this list, but this is where the locals hang out – and we hang out there for a reason! All-day breakfasts and greats deals! If you’re an early bird, then the Early Bird Breakfast (before 8 am during the week and before 9 am on weekends) is unbeatable – R30 gets you 2 eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 ostrich/pork chipolatas, fried tomato, and toast & jam.

But the reason most locals visit Arnolds is for their Chef’s Breakfast. R72 gets you scrambled eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 ostrich/pork chipolatas, sautéed mushrooms, baked beans, grilled tomato, toast, jam, and a choice of filter coffee or juice! Now read all of that again! The Chef’s Breakfast will fill you up for the rest of the day, guaranteed!

You’ll find them here: 60 Kloof Street, Gardens
