Cognac. The very word brings out feelings of class, libraries, and leather chairs. For me, it also brings out a feeling of the unfamiliar, unknown, and unexplored. And that, of course, intrigues me. Those who know me well will know how much I love exploring and learning about new things. So when I Love Foodies was invited to an exclusive tasting of the Godet House Cognac Range, my inner adventurer jumped at the opportunity.

The Godet family has been making cognac since 1550. That is before cognac was even called cognac! And they still make cognac today!  Lucky for us, our tasting was lead by none other than 15th generation Cyril Godet himself.

Cyril skillfully led us through the history of Godet, imparting knowledge and interesting facts. His love for cognac and their family motto of ‘enjoying life’ was infectious and it was truly one of the most interesting tastings I have ever experienced. Here are the Godet House Cognacs we tasted, what I learned, loved and thought:

Sipping Antarctica

Godet Antarctica Icy White: This clear drink is made by aging eau du vie in 100-year-old barrels, meaning no wood colour leaches into the cognac. According to regulations with regards to colour, it technically can’t be called a cognac, but still is one. It is served cold and I loved it!

Godet Cognac Cuvée V.S.: Taste-wise, this 3-year-old cognac is as close as you can get to the original ‘brandewijn’ from the 16th century, when Dutch settlers came to the Cognac region and ‘discovered’ how to preserve wine by distillation.

godet cognac gastronome

Gastronome

Godet Cognac Gastronome Fine Champagne: This 14-year-old cognac is blended exclusively from Grande and Petite Champagne according to a style invented by Augustine Godet in 1838.

Godet Cognac XO Terre: This 30-year-old cognac is blended from cognac from all six crus and is pretty awesome. Also, the bottle is amazing!!!

Godet Cognac Extra: This cognac tasted like heaven to me and, of course, became my favourite of the night. Only 200 bottles of this 45-year-old cognac are bottled every year. Its blend contains a small amount of cognac from 1849 from a species of vine that no longer exists! Just let that sink in for a moment …

godet cognac god by godet

God By Godet

God by Godet: This is a different type of cognac. Since its distillation, it has been aged only in one barrel, has never seen day light, never been diluted, and never been blended with another. At 71.4%, it’s very, very strong, but the idea is that you get to be ‘god’ with this cognac. You choose how much water you would like to add and literally make it your own.

So, dear Cyril and Godet House, you have made a cognac drinker out of me and I look forward to sipping some Godet Cognac very soon.

The Godet House Cognac Range has just recently been launched in South Africa and is available at select bottle stores.  A huge thank you to Crystal from Truman & Orange for arranging such a wonderful event. Thank you also to The Stack for the yummy canapés and to Godet House Cognacs for sharing your goodness with me!
