There’s no summer drink more iconic than the Rock Shandy.

This South African mocktail has been cooling summer days for decades with a timeless recipe of lemonade, soda, and Angostura aromatic bitters.

What Exactly Are Angostura Aromatic Bitters?

If you’re a fan of cocktails, you’ll probably be very familiar with Angostura aromatic bitters.

The House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago has been making this concentrated recipe of gentian, herbs, and spices according to a secret, original recipe since 1824.

The recipe contains over 40 ingredients and is – apparently – only known by a handful of people.

We don’t mind, though – as long as we get to use these bitters in all our cocktails and mocktails!

How To Make A Rock Shandy

Making this South African summer classic couldn’t be easier.

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • Lemonade
  • Soda water
  • Angostura aromatic bitters
  • Lemon

Method

  1. Add ice to a tall glass.
  2. Pour equal parts lemonade & soda water.
  3. Add 4 – 6 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters.
  4. Stir.
  5. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

Voila.
