The Village Idiot has always been our favourite Cape Town neighbourhood restaurant & bar. Understandably so – good food, good vibes, and always a good time.

Covid-19 may have led to numerous changes in Cape Town’s culinary landscape but we’re only too glad that our favourite ostrich, Oskar, is back in action.

Here are some of the not-to-miss specials currently running at the Village Idiot, as well as some other details including their menu, Covid-19 changes, and contact details.

But, first, a quick update on temporary changes that are due to Covid-19:

The Village Idiot is not currently operating according to its usual schedule. They’re now open Thursdays and Fridays from 15:00 and Saturdays from 14:00 at a limited capacity.

This means that you should definitely book a table or come early to avoid having to stand in the queue outside. Now that brings back memories of when they first opened up!

They’re also offering a limited menu that includes some of the old favourites — but also some new delicious meals!

Masks are required upon entry and within the restaurant, unless seated. Social distancing is also in place, with a minimum of 1.5 metres required between patrons at all times.

Luckily, Oskar the ostrich gives some guidance on this:

No need for confusion. Oskar is there to help re social distancing requirements.

Why Do We Love The Village Idiot?

Of course, The Village Idiot has been an I Love Foodies favourite for years. If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll have noticed that we talk about them time and time again.

That’s only testament to their consistency – no matter what changes they’ve gone through, they’ve managed to keep up the same level of awesomeness.

In today’s world, that’s worth gold.

Some things we absolutely love:

  • Their amazing decor, which is always a feast for the eyes. It’s changed over the years but there’s always something new to discover.
  • Constantly innovative offerings, from food and drink specials to tequila bars and more.
  • The cosy interior and fireplace, which is great in winter, and the chilled balcony area, perfect for any summer night
  • Their amazing food with its uniquely South African twist. And edible flowers.

It’s the perfect place for a wild night out, chilled afternoon drinks, or a delicious dinner. You want it, they’ve got it.

Blast from the past:

If you’re an old-school Village Idiot fan, you’ll surely remember the divine Spit Roast Sundaze or the Dates & Mates deal that used to run every Tuesday. You can take a look at our reviews (linked) that take you all the way back to 2015 for a real blast-from-the-past experience.

Village Idiot Menu & Prices

Fast forward to 2020.

As mentioned, The Village Idiot is currently operating with a limited menu.

But that’s no reason to despair — they’ve still got the old favourites and a few new offerings and it still embodies the delicious South African braai culture. We’ve tried both their old goodies and some of the new items, and, well, we like.

I Love Foodies favourites you have to try:

  • Salt & Vinegar Halloumi (R60)
  • Biltong & Local Charcuterie Board (R125)
  • Slow-Roasted Beef Bone Marrow (R80)
  • Boerie Burger (R115)
  • Tata Ma Chance Pork Ribs (R160 for a full portion; R90 for half)
  • Hot Or Not Taxi Wings (R135 for a full portion; R80 for half)

These prices are also indicative of the rest of the menu. Approximately, you’d be looking at an average of R70 for starters and R120 – R150 for mains.

Of the above, my personal favourites include:

  • Biltong & Local Charcuterie Board (R125): Served with cashew nuts, cranberry jam, and roosterkoek, this is the best value-for-money charcuterie board I’ve ever come across.
  • Slow-Roasted Beef Bone Marrow (R80): Served with button mushrooms and roosterkoek, this bone marrow is divine. Don’t be deceived – it may be listed as a starter and it’s super affordable but it’s a massive and absolutely filling portion.
  • Boerie Burger (R115): Served with caramelised chutney onion marmalade. This burger is delightfully flavourful and absolutely massive. It comes with a divine smoked apple slaw and your choice of chips/salad/pap. The chips are great but I always go for the salad for some extra freshness.

Drinks-wise, of course, you’ll enjoy all your favourite wines, beers, cocktails, shooters, and spirits. The Village Idiot House Wine is pretty decent and, at R35 a glass, it’s excellent value for money.
