So as most of you who follow I Love Foodies on social media will have heard, InstaEats Cape Town, Dine Guy, and I Love Foodies are running a Cape Town Burger Challenge, which is part of our #CTFoodChallenge campaign. In a nutshell, we’re looking for the best foodie places in town, and this month we’re focused on burgers. So we put out polls on Twitter, got our top five as voted by you, and now we’re on a mission to go try them all. Our first burger place of choice? Woodies!

For those that have been to Woodies, you’ll know that it’s a tiny little take-away place on the top floor of the Market on the Wharf, the famous food market at the V&A Waterfront. I’d never been there before and had only heard about it through our burger search, so wasn’t quite sure what to expect at first. I can’t tell you much about the place since the vibe is largely based on the crowd at the market, but the staff at the stall itself is fantastic – super friendly, always ready to crack a joke, and just such genuinely nice people. That alone made me love the place before I even tried the burgers.
To be fair to the restaurants that form part of our Burger Challenge, we’re asking them to give us what they think are their top burgers. And so Mark from Dine Guy was served a mushroom burger, Dean from InstaEats got the standard double (or was it triple?) patty burger, Francis, our photographer, munched on a giant chilli burger, and I got the lady-like beetroot burger. Well, I say lady-like coz it’s beetroot, but there was nothing else lady-like about it. Best way to describe these burgers? Small fat buttons. They’re compact but stuffed with toppings that makes these burgers exactly what they should be – messy and delicious and oh-so-satisfying! Though, rather surprisingly, even though they were so huge, they weren’t half as messy as they could have been (which is a good thing) – they’re not drenched in some cheap sauce, so all the burger goodness you’re enjoying is firm and compact and true goodness.

I would never have ordered a beetroot burger, so I’m quite glad I was given this one. It had all the ‘standard’ toppings – two patties, cheese, gherkins, etcetera, but came with an added layer of beetroot. It doesn’t make for a pretty photo, as you’ll see above, but it sure makes for a good burger. And I’m very proud to say that I finished the whole thing – I struggled towards the end, but I ate it all like a real foodie. Which is more than I can say for some of the guys. Heehee.

All in all, Woodies definitely gets my thumbs-up. I’m excited to find out how our next burger place will compare, so stay tuned for that! For now, if you want more info on Woodies, you can check them out on Facebook or Twitter, call them on +27 79 125 7228 or drop them a line on woodiesburgers@gmail.com.
See you all soon!
Much foodie love!
