Wine pairings are always fun. I’ve done a whole host of exciting ones, ranging from cheese and wine, chocolate and wine, steak and wine, sweets and wine, and even a music and wine pairing! The latter was particularly innovative, persuading drinkers to close their eyes and “taste” the sound of music in the wine. One of the latest pairings I tried is the Stellenbosch Hills Wine & Popcorn pairing. And the best part about this Stellenbosch Hills wine pairing is that you can enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.

While, generally, you’d enjoy a wine pairing at the estate, the current situation has spiced things up a bit, and Stellenbosch Hills has reinvented their offerings to bring consumers two wine pairing boxes (their snack-and-wine packages) that can be enjoyed at home.

Snack-And-Wine Options

The first is the Stellenbosch Hills Biltong & Wine Box (R600), which includes 6 Stellenbosch Hills wines, each paired with a selection of biltong and droëwors. The second is the Popcorn & Polkadraai Box (R300), contains four wines from the easy-drinking Polkadraai range and 8 packets of popcorn (in four flavours) by the Guzzle & Wolf Gourmet Popcorn Company. This is also the box I tried.

Popcorn & Polkadraai Box

The Popcorn & Polkadraai box has been created for two people, and pairs 4 full-size bottles of wine and bubbly with 4 flavours of popcorn. There are two packets of each popcorn flavour in the box.

The pairings are as follows:

  • Sauvignon Blanc Brut (bubbly) paired with Coconut & Chia Seeds popcorn
  • Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc paired with Salted Caramel popcorn
  • Rose paired with Cinnamon & Pretzel popcorn
  • Pinotage/Merlot paired with Dark Chocolate popcorn

Of course, these are the recommended pairings and, as always, you’re welcome to mix and match the popcorn and wine as you choose. But these pairings were obviously created by people in the know – they make the most sense and they’re absolutely divine. All of them pair beautifully and the wine and respective popcorn flavours complement each other wonderfully. In some instances, like with the bubbly and coconut popcorn, the popcorn adds some sweetness to a quite dry bubbly. In others, like with the rose pairing, the wine adds some sweetness to the popcorn.

The Wine & Popcorn Ranges

I am familiar with Guzzle & Wolf gourmet popcorn and have had them a few times before. They offer a very extensive range of the finest popcorn and definitely give you that fresh-in-a-pack flavour. This is my first time trying the Stellenbosch Hills Polkadraai range, however, and I’m thoroughly impressed. These aren’t expensive wines (you’re looking at an average of R50 a bottle) but they are so incredibly easy-drinking and great for lighter meals. Or, you know, popcorn pairings.

That’s definitely one of the greatest things about South African wines. They’re available locally at fantastic prices, and many of them are phenomenal. Sure, I do enjoy a good expensive bottle every now and then, but if I’m choosing a bottle for a casual Saturday lunch or a weekday dinner, I always prefer to go for something more affordable (as long as it’s still delicious, like these wines are).

Review: My Favourite Pairing

My favourite of the pairings was the Rose and Cinnamon & Pretzel pairing. This was surprising as Rose isn’t usually my wine of choice. But this one was light and fruity with a wonderful strawberry flavour – without being overly sweet. Popcorn-wise, I would have expected to fall in love with the Salted Caramel (which is still delicious) but the Cinnamon & Pretzel combo worked so well.

Personally, I thought the Popcorn & Polkadraai Box was a wonderful experience. I love that you can enjoy it at home and thus still do your part to make a difference right now. But it definitely adds a little bit of excitement to your usual routine. I’ve still been taking lockdown quite seriously and don’t venture out much, and while I do stay enormously productive and keep myself entertained, my usual routine does get a little boring at times. This wine pairing is the perfect antidote to weekend boredom!!!
