Cape Town is a city filled with “craft” things – craft beer, craft gin, craft ciders, craft burgers … or craft pizzas. These aren’t your cheese-sloshed junk pizzas (delicious as they may be) but gourmet-styles artisan pizzas full of goodness. And that’s exactly what you’ll get at The Base at the President Hotel!

I can best describe The Base as a pizza bar. It’s situated outside, next to the gorgeous President Hotel pool area, and is the perfect place to lounge, eat good food, and catch the views.

If you haven’t been, I can highly recommend going to check it out. The President Hotel is open to receiving outside guests, and you can visit any of their restaurants or bars for casual lunch, dinner, or drinks.

(I’d also recommend staying the night, waking up to the sound of seagulls, and heading down for one of the best breakfast buffets in the city!)

But I digress … We first visited The Base for their launch party in 2017 (how’s that for a throwback?), and it was one of those typically gorgeous Cape Town days with no wind and breathtaking views.

And, of course, everything is always just that extra bit nicer at the President Hotel. Just look at the view below:

Can you beat this view at the President Hotel?*

But while you may visit the President Hotel to drool over the views, you’re probably more likely to drool over the delicious pizzas.

The Base Pizzas

The Base serves good ol’ artisanal wood-fired pizzas on a thin, crispy base with tons of cheese and gourmet toppings.

You’ll find everything from squid with roast garlic aioli to baby marrows with pickled carrots and beef mince with coriander salsa.

The menu does change regularly, though.

In the past, I’ve had a fantastic prosciutto and fig pizza and a delicious pulled pork and blush peach compote pizza, which are no longer on the menu.

I loved the prosciutto, gorgonzola, rocket, and fig pizza.

More recently, I still enjoyed the delicious Al Salmone pizza, topped with smoked salmon, creme fraiche, capers, chives, avocado, and mozzarella.

This was actually one of the pizzas I had at the initial launch party and more recently when The President Hotel was doing deliveries (during and just after the pandemic lockdown period).

A few years later, the smoked salmon pizza was still a winner.

Unfortunately, you can no longer order The Base pizzas for delivery – but you can still Whatsapp them to pre-order for pick-up! More on this further down.

A firm favourite is the Absolutely FAB pizza, which I’ve had numerous times. Topped with feta, avocado, bacon, peppadews, and mozzarella, this pizza is a true winner!

The Absolutely FAB pizza is true to its name – absolutely fab!

The Base also caters to numerous dietary requirements, including:

  • Gluten-free diets
  • Vegetarians
  • Vegans (cashew nut cheese is available)

You can also add your own toppings to any pizza of your choice at an additional cost.

Judging from the multiple pizzas I’ve had at The Base – and the countless times I’ve visited The President Hotel – I’m pretty confident in saying that no matter what you’ll have, it’s bound to impress.
