I’ve always been a fan of a random selection of ever-changing fruits and vegetables. It’s obviously important to get a wide range of fresh fruits and veggies into your diet, so last year I started “forcing” myself to buy something different every week. Now there’s a new — and easier — way to do just that, and that’s through Cape Town’s OddBox fruit and vegetable grocery delivery service.

You may have heard about OddBox.

I first stumbled upon them a little while ago and fell in love with their super cute website. But there’s a whole lot of functionality behind the cuteness. So let’s explore.

What Is OddBox?

In a nutshell, OddBox aims to deliver 100% seasonal, organic and fresh fruits and vegetables straight to your door. Everything is literally picked hours before delivery, guaranteeing absolute garden freshness.

And it’s not just good food.

OddBox is involved in an initiative facilitated by the WC Department of Agriculture to help the organic micro-farmers in Khayelitsha and the Cape Flats with a route to market.

By supporting them, you can enjoy the freshest, most delicious produce and support local in the process.

How much does OddBox cost?

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that OddBox is amazingly affordable.

There are two main options:

  • The Double, which feeds 1-2 people for a week at R119 per box
  • The Family, which feeds 4 people for a week at R199 per box

What’s In Your OddBox?

There are two main options you can choose from:

  • Mostly Veg, which includes a few fruit staples, like bananas and apples, and tons of veggies, like cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms, potatoes, tomatoes, and more.
  • Balanced Mix, which includes a perfect balance of fruit and veg, including bananas, apples, pineapple, broccoli, gem squash, and more.

Of course, since OddBox focuses on seasonal produce, there will be some variations depending on when you order the box.

In addition to the two main options listed above, OddBox also features a host of optional add-ons, including a variety of fruits and vegetables that may not already be in your box, home-baked bread, cheese, kombucha, rusks, condiments, soups, eggs, and milk.

Custom Boxes

When you click on the “order now” on the OddBox homepage, you’ll see that you can also select a custom ‘Build Your Own’ box, where you can pick and choose from all the available items and create your own supply of fruit and vegetables.

The minimum order for this is R199.

Then there’s also the Organic Box, where you can add items from their purely organic produce.

How To Order

The ordering process is pretty simple and the OddBox website is set up in a way that literally walks you through every step of the way.

You start off by selecting the type of box you want, are offered a variety of substitutes (i.e. perhaps the fruit of the week is strawberry but you’re allergic and then you can swap for something else), can add on optional extras, and then finish off the payment process.

Voila, it’s that simple.

These broad beans were delightful – spongy and fluffy on the inside and so tasty

The I Love Foodies OddBox Review

We tried out the Organic Box, with a few optional extras.

Everything is delivered moist, still somewhat sandy, and superbly fresh. You can literally still smell the ground on these veggies — that’s how insanely fresh they are.

Our box included everything you can see in the pictures — spinach, radish, beetroot, turnip, kohlrabi, nectarine, pineapple, strawberries, leek, lettuce, carrot, beans, sugar snap peas, and a freshly baked loaf of bread.

Most of the fruits and veggies we ate as is to enjoy the freshness, though I did create some lovely dishes, including creamed spinach, leek and potato soup, apple and kohlrabi salad, and numerous salads.

I buy most of my organic pantry ingredients via Faithful to Nature. Like OddBox, they delivery straight to your front door, making shopping hassle-free. All of their products are also high-quality and I’ve always had a wonderful experience with them.

Taste The Freshness

People always say you can taste the difference between fresh, organic produce and mass-produced fruits and veggies.

And it’s true, you really can.

The pineapple, for example, was the juiciest, sweetest, most delectable pineapple I’ve ever eaten.

I usually have quite a strong reaction to pineapple – that standard tingly/burning sensation in the mouth that many people sensitive to pineapple often have. But not this one – not one hint of it.

And if that’s not goodness, then I don’t know what is.

Perfect For One, Perfect For All

There’s no way you can wrong with OddBox.

90% of my weekly shopping consists of fruit and veggies and it’s never as fresh or as cheap as OddBox is.

Plus, the variety is unbeatable.

If you’ve been wanting to eat more and a greater variety of fruits and veggies, or get your kids or hubby to munch more healthily, then this grocery delivery service is definitely the way to go.

Try OddBox
