Stellenbosch Hills Magnificent Seven at Makaron Restaurant
One nippy Tuesday, a bunch of assorted foodie peeps met up at the glorious Majeka House in Stellenbosch to experience the release of Stellenbosch Hills’ ‘magnificent seven’. And it was magnificent. The end. I joke, I joke. There is of course more to the story! We did, however, all meet at Majeka House to try out the newest Stellenbosch Hills releases with a paired lunch at Makaron Restaurant!
On the aforementioned nippy day, we were welcomed with a beautiful roaring fire and bubbles in form of the Sauvignon Blanc Brut 2017. After catching up with everyone, we made our way into the Makaron Restaurant to start the pairing adventure! Appetisers to accompany our bubbles – farm egg and snoek tertjies with whole wheat sourdough and amasi butter – kicked off the magic.
Chenin & Shiraz with Octopus
The first wines we got to try were the Chenin Blanc 20118 and the Shiraz 20116, both paired with fire-roasted octopus, kohlrabi, and apple. The idea was to pair the wine with different parts of the octopus, the roasted and unroasted side, but for the life of me, I can’t remember which one was which. I absolutely loved the concept and it was a definite hit.
Sauvignon Blanc with Pickled Line Fish
Next up we tried the Sauvignon Blanc 2018 with 5-day aged line fish, pickled potato, green olives and spinach. I’m not a big seafood fan and this dish wasn’t for me, but everyone seemed to love it – and the pairing. I just paired the wine with a second sip, and can easily understand why this is Stellenbosch Hills’ top performing wine.
Merlot, Cab Sav, and Pinotage with Lamb
The lamb ‘staanrib’ main course, served with pickled waterblommetjies and whole lemon, was paired with the Merlot 2016, the Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, and the Bushvine Pinotage 2016. First up, let me just say that this dish was out of this world. I am still craving to have some more as I write this. And, as to the pairing, I thought the Cab Sav suited the meal the best. I also loved the full bodied Merlot on its own. But the thing about pairings is that it’s so subjective and everyone thinks something else!
Muscat with Banana Carpaccio
Last up we tried the Muscat de Hambourgh ’16 with banana carpaccio, roasted yeast caramel and sourdough ice cream. I had no idea what to expect from this dessert, but it turns out I like banana carpaccio!
Try the Wines, Get to Makaron
I was pleasantly surprised by the new wine releases from Stellenbosch Hills. Not only were they all super yummy, but they are incredibly affordable too, ranging from R50 to R80 a bottle. There really isn’t an excuse to have bad wine!!!
