Mouille Point’s Butcher Shop & Grill
The best thing about living in Cape Town, especially as a foodie, is that it has such amazing gems to fill the tummy! I am one of those Xhosa women who believe that a meal is not complete if there is no meat. So imagine my excitement when I Love Foodies was invited to the 25th birthday of the Butcher Shop & Grill, and I got to go! The words “butcher shop” was all that had to be said to convince me to attend this amazing event because, in my mind, the word butcher means one thing: good food!
The History of The Butcher Shop
Now for a little bit of history about this gem: Founder Alan Pick’s mother, Fay Pick, was the first female butcher in South Africa. In 1994, Alan identified a restaurant site within what was becoming Sandton Square. This became The Butcher Shop & Grill, where he conceptualised the walk-up butchery counter for patrons to select their own type, cut and size of meat. This was the first butchery-based restaurant in South Africa. The butcheries at both the Cape Town and Johannesburg branches supply trade across the country to many restaurants, hotels, and shops.
On arrival, we were given some much deserved bubbly. Then we were led to the kitchen, were all the magic happens. Here we were shown and taught about the different meats available at the Butcher Shop & Grill and how they are cut.
Just a side note guys, my sister, who was my partner for the birthday, tapped me on the shoulder while I was listening and learning about meat and then pointed up. I almost dropped my glass when a noticed a whole cow on top of me!!! Hahaha, I love it!
Anyway, back to the meat. We were told about rump, rib-eye, T-bone, and some sirloin. Fun fact: meat with a lot of fat is usually high in flavour. So don’t be afraid of the fat!The Butcher Shop & Grill serves only the best mature aged meat, including superb local beef and lamb, Argentinian ribeye, Kobe-style wagyu and Dutch veal. Their meat hangs in carcass for three days, after which their rump, sirloin, fillet, ribeye, T-bone and prime rib are aged for 21-40 days, at which point they invite you to take a walk, stand at the counter and make your choice of a specific cut or a larger cut. Get it on or off the bone; grass or grain-fed.
The Foodie Feast
Now, on to the feast! And when I say feast, I mean feast! There was no time to breathe, everything came at a fast pace so we had to get our stomachs ready! I am talking rib-eye, fillet, chops, potatoes, creamy spinach, mushrooms, butternut, and a slow-cooked lamb in the most delicious gravy! Man oh man, this was complete heaven.
The presentation, the décor, the wine, I am tearing up just thinking about it. Do you ever get emotional when thinking about food, especially if it was amazing??
Dessert Dessert Dessert
While we were starting to calm down and just take all this amazingness in, out came dessert. A rich, gooey chocolate brownie and a tart with ice-cream. If you thought the feast was great, dessert had me dying!
A World of Goodness at The Butcher Shop & Grill: Try It
The Butcher Shop & Grill, which also boasts an amazing variety and selection of wines, is also situated in the most beautiful place: Mouille Point. When you are sitting outside you have the most breath-taking view of the sea. It does not get any better. Needless to say, after this wonderful event, my sister and I were back there a week after for Sunday lunch!
