Gourmet Burgers at Gibson’s
Burgers and milkshakes are undoubtedly always a winning combination, so I was over the moon to get the chance to sample Gibson’s gourmet burgers and milkshakes at the V&A Waterfront with Benike.
As restaurants in the Waterfront go, the stunning view of the mountain is always a given. But Gibson’s outside seating overlooking the harbour is an added bonus to watch the boats and get a feel for the hustle and bustle. I had heard great things about the deep fried onion blossom starter but because Gibson’s specializes in gourmet burgers, we decided to jump straight to those.
The Rolls Royce of Burgers
The menu has an array of options, with the choice of beef, chicken or vegetarian burgers accompanied by lavish toppings. Apparently the Tex Mex burger is their top seller, but I went for the Governor’s Deluxe because topping a burger with cheese, bacon and guacamole is my idea of heaven. And, I must admit, I was very impressed. I loved the chargrilled flavour with the yummy sweet mustard sauce and the beef patty was cooked medium, but still very juicy.
You can choose between a small (160g) or regular (200g) size. I had the small but the portion was still very decent. You also get the option of a salad, normal fries, or sweet potato fries on the side. We had the salad, which was massive, and the sweet potato fries, which were delicious with their secret sauce no 6.
There’s Milkshakes and then there’s Freek Shakes
As a renowned sweet tooth with a self-diagnosed addiction to desserts, there is only one thing I love more than eating ice cream. And that is drinking milkshakes. After looking through the elaborate list of over 120 milkshake flavour combinations, we decided to push the boat out and try their Freek Shakes. For those of you who don’t know, a Freek Shake is a milkshake covered in amazing toppings.
We eventually decided to try the Peanut Butter Chocolate and Peppermint Caramel Freek Shakes. They arrived loaded with whipped cream, chocolates, nuts, and wafers. Again, I chose the small size (450ml), but it was huge!
In all honesty, the Freek Shakes looked incredible with their decadent toppings but they tasted just like any other milkshake. They had a good consistency and were not too milky, but after a few sips of the sweet nectar I was not convinced they were really worth the price. So next time I would probably go for one of the regular milkshakes on the menu – I was tempted by the Top Deck or Cookies and Cream flavours.
