Delheim Jazz

Live jazz, bottomless wine, and amazing food. This was the setup at the Delheim Jazz & Cheese Fondue, which was held at the breathtakingly beautiful Simonsberg sub-region of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

First of all, I think it is best to be honest and just put it out there that I am not a fan of jazz. But after hearing the live jazz of the Cape Town Music Academy and Jazz in the Native Yards collaboration, I am definitely giving jazz a second thought … live jazz, that is.

The Jazz Companies

First off, let me introduce the two jazz companies. The Cape Town Music Academy is a not-for-profit company that seeks to create opportunities for local, established and emerging musicians and related artists in the Western Cape. Jazz in the Native Yards, founded by Koko Nkalashe and Luvuyo Kakaza, is an initiative of Native Yards Arts, a township-based creative arts enterprise, and seeks to promote existing live music performance spaces and create new venues for artists to showcase their talent in different areas of the Western Cape.

Arriving at Delheim

When we arrived at Delheim, we were led through a magical pathway of trees to the main venue, which was the downstairs cellar. We could already hear the live band while walking down to the cellar. Once there, we were greeted by the friendliest waiter, who showed us to our table.

The cellar is everything that you would imagine it to be: Wine barrels, wine racks filled with wine, and a museum-esque space that showcases the journey of Delheim Wines through the years.

Then, we were immediately blessed with the Delheim Pinotage Rose. What a smooth wine; just the right amount of sweet and fruitiness. This is where my partner and I stationed until yours truly got a taste of the Delheim Gewurztraminer!

Now, I know very well that you struggled to pronounce that name like I did, right? I don’t know how many times I asked our waiter to repeat the pronunciation and I still left the event not knowing how to pronounce it properly! Hahaha!

Anyway, guys, this wine is everything! It’s a white wine with just the right amount of sweetness, smooth and spicy, with a bit of a citrus feel. It was luxurious! Needless to say, the Pinotage Rose was booted out and the Gewurztraminer was given the main seat at the table.

We also got a chance to taste Delheim’s Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, the Pinotage, and the Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment. Gewurztraminer still won.

The Cheese Fondue

Now, on to the food. I noticed when we sat at our table that there was a little vase with a jelly-looking substance inside it. Then one of the waiters came around to light it up. Low and behold, this was the stand for the pot that was filled with a three-cheese fondue.

To top it off, the fondue was coupled with a medium rare sliced sirloin steak, a vegetable medley, and small squares of baguette. The way we were dipping everything in the fondue … gosh … it was absolutely delicious! My partner and I had never had fondue before, but we are both cheese lovers, so, yes, you’ve guessed it, the fondue definitely got a thumbs up from us!

Visit Delheim Jazz & Cheese Fondue Events

All in all, the Delheim Jazz and Cheese Fondue event was the perfect way to spend a nice chilled winter Sunday in Cape Town. If you love live music, wine, great food, beautiful scenery and a relaxed easy-going vibe, then this is for you.

This event runs every Sunday till 26 August! So you know what to do. You can thank me later!

  • Time: 12h00 with the first jazz gig happening at 12h30. The fondue will be served at 13h15.
