Mantra is one of those beautiful Cape Town-chic restaurants on the Camps Bay strip. What makes it even better, though, is the fact that it is on the first floor and you get those magical uninterrupted views of the beach and, of course, even more magical sunsets! And I do like a good view with my breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Now, Mantra used to serve one of my favourite breakfasts. It was an open omelette with crème fraiche and a few other goodies and it was literally to die for. I had never had anything but that breakfast at Mantra and figured it was about time to change that … So, when the chance to join a media table with some of our fave fellow foodie friends came up, I jumped at the chance!
A Warm Welcome
On arrival at Mantra, I was greeted by loads of smiles. Cause that is just the place Mantra is. I was also greeted with The Hugo (MCC, elderflower cordial, soda, lemon peel, R75) and some breath-taking sunset views. The cocktail was yummy, refreshing and light enough to have more than one.
After catching up with friends and snapping a million sunset pics, it was time to choose what to have for dinner! Mantra has a good selection on their menu and there is bound to be something for almost everyone. Ah, decisions, decisions …
Off To A Good Start
Starters were easy. I knew I wanted the grilled calamari with fresh green chimichurri sauce (R115). And I was super happy with my choice. This dish was just perfect and actually much bigger than I expected it to be! A little bit of the Warwick First Lady Chardonnay (R180/bottle) was the perfect accompaniment.
For mains, I really liked the sound of the Pork belly (slow-cooked pork belly served with spicy sweet citrus glaze; R185). The pan-seared line fish (R235) was also an option. There is just something about eating seafood at the beach.
Eventually I decided on the thick cut rump (300g), grilled with Mantra basting sauce (R185), and paired with some La Motte 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (R375/bottle).
I love steak more than anything in the world, and it was perfectly done, but I found the basting sauce too overpowering and probably wouldn’t order it again because of that.
Although I hardly ever order desserts, I really wanted to try the baked cheesecake (R68). Then the Lemon Tart (R55) and the Pear Frangipane (R68) caught my eye and I thought I would try something more exciting. In the end, I went with the pear frangipane (poached pears baked in almond frangipane with vanilla ice cream), but it was sadly much sweeter than expected and I didn’t really enjoy it. But that may just be me and it may be perfect for someone else.
Till Next Time
Having said that, and judging from my starters and what the people around me had ordered, I would visit Mantra again in a heartbeat. Mantra’s service is excellent, their portions are generous, and the atmosphere is just wonderful. So, next time, calamari starters, the pork belly mains and cheesecake will be had! Oh, and here’s hoping that awesome breakfast makes a comeback!!!!

Had to add this in: It was such a beautiful night last night, so Benike and I decided to pop into Mantra for some cocktails. Benike had her fave, the Cosmo, which was super yum, and I had a Margarita. Now, I have been holding my own little margarita competition and I am proud to announce that Mantra now holds a 5-star rating in my little margarita score book. It shares this with only two other places in CT. So, yay! And thank you to Allan for creating such margarita magic!
In chatting with our awesome waiter, we also learned that Mantra is running a half price Winter Special, and Tuesdays is seafood pasta night. Benike has had a little love affair with seafood pasta for most of her life, so this was just something that had to be tried! And yummy it was. A beautiful creamy sauce with a generous portion of pasta and loads of mussels, some fish and a huge prawn made this the perfect meal on a cold winter night. By the way, the specials for the rest of the week: Mondays are Mantra Beef Burger, Wednesdays are Sticky BBQ Pork Ribs, and Thursdays are Lamb Curry, all half price on the respective nights. I do love a good special! Oh, and selected cocktails are half price between 16:00 – 19:00 too!
