It’s picnic season! Well, for me, it’s always picnic season but, with the warmer days (this week excluded), there really is no excuse not to go picnicking. And my new favourite essential? Treats by the Picnic Company.
My picnics are usually quite lame. I’m really not one of those gifted — or perhaps just committed? — people, who’ll whip up amazing salads, small snacks, delicate cucumber sandwiches, and lime cordials to enjoy in the outdoors. If I’m lucky I’ll make some snackwiches — though I always say I will and never do. I think I had my first snackwich in a good five years over lockdown!
Usually, my picnic prep involves a trip to Woolworths to purchase all their tiny little nuggets of deliciousness that may just as well be nuggets of gold considering the price you’re paying. If I’m splurging, I’ll buy some sparkling water. If not, I’ll just refill a bottle from home and take that as my classy drink.
See why my picnics are usually quite lame? I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re always fun and everything’s always delicious. But just never quite what I imagine it could be.
So when I stumbled upon the Picnic Company over the lockdown period, I knew my picnic world was about to become much better.
What Is The Picnic Company?
The Picnic Company is literally the coolest thing since sliced bread. And given my monstrous bread cutting abilities, sliced bread really is quite cool.
The Picnic Company doesn’t just do picnics. They’re a one-spot-stop for all your catering and events requirements too. And they’ve even got some freezer essentials you can purchase and keep in your freezer if the need to impress guests ever arises!
They also set up gift hampers and care packages, which sounds awesome! I wouldn’t say no to a delicious eat-me-now care package!
But back to the picnics. In a nutshell, the Picnic Company takes care of all of your picnic needs. Whether you’re heading out with friends, family, or for a corporate function, they’ve got you covered with a variety of picnic baskets, platters, and individual items.
You can easily purchase a ready-made basket, which includes delicious options like the Afternoon Tea Picnic, Breakfast Celebration Picnic, or the Summer Loving Picnic.
But you can also mix and match individual items. This is especially beneficial if you’re catering for dietary requirements. Yes, it does require a little more work as you’ll have to go through all of the baskets to see what’s available. But you can also just chat to the team and they’ll whip something up for you. This is what I did, which we’ll get to in a bit.
Picnic options include:
- Picnics for One (from R115) — perfect for when you’re joining a larger group somewhere
- Picnics for Two (from R460) — the perfect picnic
- Picnics for Four (from R500) — for families or friends
- Picnics for Kids (from R110) — so you can keep the little ones nibbling. Also great for kiddie parties.
- Picnic Platters (from R740) — for corporate functions, parties, etc.
You can choose options that just include food, others that include food and drinks, and even the gourmet options where the company will go ahead and set up an entire picnic area for you, complete with blankets and chairs and tables and whatever else you may need.
So, as you may have gathered, the Picnic Company really does do it all when it comes to offering you a divine picnic.
Of course, it’s likely that you have reservations, so we took them for a test drive — and, oh boy, you’re in for a treat!
The I Love Foodies Review
It was my birthday a little while back, and my sister, Sabine, and I really wanted to head out to Giraffe House and enjoy a picnic.
As luck would have it, I was chatting to Tammy from the Picnic Company literally two days before, and she offered to take my picnic planning off my hands and drop off a picnic basket.
As we’d be picnicking on a Sunday morning, she dropped off the basket on Saturday evening and made sure that everything it contained would remain fresh in the fridge overnight for next-day consumption. She also mixed and matched different items to allow for more variety as Sabine follows a low-carb diet.
On The Menu
Our picnic basket included a host of delicious items, ranging from a charcuterie and cheese platter, fresh salads, snacks, quiches, and more. It also included a bottle of nonalcoholic Bellini, perfect for celebrations.
On the menu:
- Roasted & sea-salted tree nut medley
- Fresh seasonal fruit bowl
- Date and coconut balls
- Belgian chocolate brownie fingers
- Spicy Cape Malay crackles mix
- Chopped salad cup of baby tomatoes, crunchy cucumber, red onion, Italian parsley, and chickpeas with lemon and olive oil dressing
- A trio of cheeses: local camembert, Huegenot cheddar, and imported gorgonzola
- Chef’s choice of charcuterie
- Cape gooseberry preserve, an assortment of dried fruits, candied tree nuts, savoury crackers, and homemade melba toast
- Mini quiche of the day
- Nonalcoholic mango & coconut sparkling bellini
And everything else you’d possibly need was included as well — Eco picnic plates, plastic wine glasses, wooden cutlery, and serviettes.
What first struck me was how utterly beautiful everything was. There’s no need for the Picnic Company to put in the effort that they do, decorating everything with little flowers and making sure it looks absolutely gorgeous. But the fact that they do makes them all the more spectacular. How can you not enjoy a salad if it’s topped with pretty flowers?
We all know that we feast with our eyes first, and the Picnic Company wins in this aspect. If nothing else, the food you’ll get will be absolutely gorgeous. And if you’re planning on impressing someone, then you can definitely impress away.
Luckily, everything tastes as delicious as it looks. Both Sabine and I were thoroughly impressed with every single item. I loved the variety, and everything was fresh, tasty, and full of flavour.
Choosing a favourite is impossible, though we both loved the chopped salad, cheese and charcuterie board, and the little snack items. I also became wonderfully obsessed with the crisps and the brownies.
Picnics Made Easy
The Picnic Company really does make having a divine picnic that simple.
Sabine and I packed a picnic blanket and ended up placing everything into a picnic basket. But the Picnic Company provided everything else — food, drinks, cutlery, crockery. Nothing was missing. It even comes delivered in a neat package, so you don’t even have to have to a picnic basket.
This was without a doubt the most wonderful picnic experience I’ve ever had, and I certainly can’t wait to go back for more!!!
