We Chat To Grand Illusionist Darcy Oake About Food & Magic

Darcy Oake

We recently got the chance to watch Darcy Oake live at the GrandWest for The Illusionists, Direct from Broadway. This is a magic mastery show combining talents from around the world, including disappearance acts, death-defying stunts, mastery mind-reading, and comic relief. Darcy Oake, the Grand Illusionist, is at the centre of this performance (watch his most famous snippet below). We had the chance to catch up with the award-winning star to chat about magic and food in the Mother City.

Thanks for taking the time out to chat to us at I Love Foodies. For those that aren’t familiar with you and your history, could you give us a short intro into who you are, what you do, and your relationship with magic?

I am an illusionist who has dedicated my life to sharing the art of magic. I’ve been performing magic since I was a little kid and have been fortunate to be able to turn my passion into a career and see some amazing places around the world! Magic is a universal language that puts all walks of life on the same level. You don’t even need to speak the same language to be able to experience magic.

While we do love magic, we also really like food. And apparently so do you. Since you’ve spent a bit of time exploring Cape Town, you would likely have come across numerous of our world-class restaurants. Do you have a local Cape Town favourite?

I love how good the meat is out here! I don’t think I’ve ever had better meat than in South Africa. Another highlight has been the Cape Town Fish Market. They have these tuna tacos that I ate every day during rehearsals!

Is there anything that strikes you as particularly interesting when it comes to food or food trends in Cape Town, if you’ve noticed anything?

What I love about the food in Cape Town is the variety. There are so many amazing restaurants and different types of cuisine. I definitely gained a few pounds in Cape Town!

Magic is a wonderful thing, and we dream of making things happen magically all the time – if you could magically make any food appear in abundance, what would it be and why?

That’s a tough one. I go through phases of finding something that I really like and then eating it every day until I’m sick of it! But right now, if I could make one food appear in abundance it would probably be the tuna tacos from the Cape Town Fish Market. Whatever they put on those things is absolutely mouth-watering!

What’s next in the world for you, and can you foresee a future visit to Cape Town?

After we finish this run in South Africa, we are taking the show to the Middle East. It’s amazing how my passion has allowed me to see the world. I’ve actually been to Cape Town several times in the past and always look forward to coming back. It’s such a beautiful place and the weather is amazing. Whenever the opportunity arises I will be back!

And there you go, that’s the Grand Illusionist Darcy Oake in a nutshell. While sadly his time in Cape Town is over for now, you can still catch The Illusionists up in Jburg. Get your tickets here.
