HQ Date Night with Cavalli Estate

HQ Date Night

The thing about dates is that there is some luck involved. I’ve had some pretty terrible ones, which is why I usually just stick with my sister as my ideal ‘date’. I mean, she’s punctual, polite, we have great conversations, get each other’s jokes, know each other’s best and worst sides, and still love each other unconditionally. Although, I’m a bit upset with her cause she left me for London (check out the I Love Foodies London Chronicles) and I constantly have to find other ‘dates’. Luckily, when HQ Date Night popped up in our inbox, I didn’t need a date – ironically, as it was going to be a bunch of us fellow foodie peeps and friends. Sigh of relief!

I think there is something wonderful about knowing what to expect. Like when my sister is my ‘date’, there are just no nasty surprises. And that is the same with HQ. For those who don’t know, HQ does one menu, and they do it well. Salad, steak and chips. Same good, consistent quality every single time. But more about that in a little.  We, the foodies peeps and friends, went to visit HQ on Tuesday Date Night to try out their cocktails and to enjoy the menu with their new wine partner, Cavalli Estate.

The Margarita Challenge

There is one cocktail I love. The margarita. Nine times out of ten, when ordering a cocktail, it will be my first choice. My friend Darryn and I even had a year-long challenge to find the best one in town.  And because the HQ cocktail menu has a Jam Jar Margarita (Omeca Altos, naartjie liqueur, orange marmalade and fresh lime juice R74), I had one. It was tangy and delicious, and if I wasn’t quite such a light weight, I would have had another … A definite contender in the top margarita list!

The HQ Date Night Menu

Now, as already mentioned, HQ serves one menu, but on different nights you get different deals. Tuesday is Date Night at HQ. This means you and your ‘date’ each get the 2-course menu (salad, steak, bottomless fries), plus a glass of Cavalli Black Beauty for R295 per couple.

Cavalli Estate Black Beauty Shiraz

Cavalli Estate recently joined HQ as a wine partner for date night and it’s the Black Beauty Shiraz you will be having. It’s an expressive velvety wine, full of flavour and body. I really enjoyed it and actually have a bottle open at home to be enjoyed a bit later today. Yay me!

Cos Lettuce Salad

On the menu side, the salad, which you will be served first, consists of cos and iceberg lettuce, toasted pine nuts, parmesan shavings, and a vinaigrette dressing. As you may have figured out if you read my posts, I’m a rather picky eater. Also, I’m not a fan of lettuce of any kind. Usually I will eat everything but the lettuce in a salad. But in this salad, I even ate the lettuce. It’s soooo good. And that says a lot. Thank you HQ for making lettuce yummy, even for me!

Steak & Bottomless Fries

After your salad, it’s time for steak and fries! Your waiter will check with you before to see how you want your steak done and actually write it on the paper covering the table cloth. I always think that’s rather awesome and a little bit hard core. But in a good way. The steak is a 250g grilled sirloin and is smothered with the most delicious Café de Paris butter. With it, there are super crispy and very yummy fries. These are also bottomless and the waiter will always be ready to refill your plate!

Check Out HQ Date Night

I’ve done HQ Date Night a few times before, and always enjoyed it. It’s definitely one of my favourite specials in town. And I really like the new wine offering too! So, my suggestion, grab a date, friend, sibling, or a random stranger if that is your thing, and try out HQ Date Night.
