I’ve always had an idea of what a life of luxury would be like – having a massage once a week, eating sushi all the time, actually enjoying shopping for clothes and not losing one’s breath every time one sees the price tags, you know, that sort of thing. But turns out my idea of luxury was framed very much from within my current mind set – i.e. the stuff I have now, but more, and better.
Turns out, luxury is nothing like that. There are things that exist within that ‘luxury’ definition that I – aka, normal person – would never even dream of. Luxury will take you places you didn’t even know existed. And the only reason I now know that there is such a magical thing is because I got to spend a day at the One & Only Spa.
Now, I’ll say upfront, visiting the One & Only Spa isn’t particularly cheap. It’s gonna cost you a lot more than your average beauty treatment or massage, but it also gives you a lot more than your average beauty treatment or massage. So if you want to spoil yourself – and I mean really spoil yourself – then you’ll be wanting to save up for a day here. Why? Because you’re not just paying for a treatment, you’re paying for a day in heaven. So this is what a day in heaven looks like:
Arriving At The One & Only Spa
I arrived at the One & Only Spa at about 10:30 in the morning for a facial and a massage. I’d just finished shooting a European film and all the heavy make-up made my skin look like I was 14. Embarrassing, I know. So some me time was definitely in order. Since it was my first time at the spa, I had to fill out some paperwork, but got to sip delicious berry tea while doing so … and ended up wishing there were more paper work to fill out!
But, alas, there was not, and so I was taken downstairs to the changing rooms, where a bathrobe and slippers awaited me. I then got to wait in the waiting room, with iced tea and fruits available if needed, until my therapist was ready for me. And that wasn’t long. So off we went to the treatment room. I’d like to call this a mini hotel room, with en suite bathroom and all.
There are things that exist within that ‘luxury’ definition that I – aka, normal person – would never even dream of. Luxury will take you places you didn’t even know existed.
Treatments at the One & Only Spa are slightly different to any I had ever experienced before. For example, you get to choose which fragrances and oils you prefer for the treatment, you get spoiled with a heated massage bed and warm bean bags to cover your eyes, added scalp massages, etc. I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing the actual treatments were. My body felt fully relaxed and my skin actually cleared up instantly. That was definitely a first!
The Relax Lounge
But while the treatments were pretty amazing, the real luxury experience only started afterwards. You see, after you finish your actual treatments, you get taken to the Relax Lounge. This is a glorious little kitchen and lounge space filled with healthy fruit, chia puddings, and yoghurt snacks, delectable chocolates and muffins, an assortment of teas, fresh juices, and, the ultimate luxury, bubbly! You get to hang out here – they have an adjoining room with heated beds for you to relax on – or you can take your snacks outside and enjoy the sunshine if it’s a pretty day.
Needless to say, I was pretty much in heaven right about now. I didn’t have any bubbly, but fresh fruits, Lindt chocolate balls, and freshly squeezed juices made me very happy. But I was also curious to see what lay beyond the changing rooms.
The Full Spa Experience
This is where the actual spa experience comes in, as everyone who books a treatment at the One & Only also has access to this spa area. Don’t worry, it’s split by gender and accessed through the respective changing rooms.
And when you’re done with all your relaxing, the One & Only Spa provides body wash, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hair brushes, hair straighteners, shaving kits, dental kits, mouth wash …
The spa area contains a Vitality Pool, a pool heated to about 34 degrees with lots of bubbles and water pressure for a warm massage feeling, a sauna, a steam room, and an ice bath. A what? Yeah, exactly. This is pretty much a pillar containing a bath of crushed ice. The idea is that when you exit one of the hot areas, like the sauna, you take a handful of the crushed ice and wash your body with it. This is supposed to work wonders and really pump you up!
Being the experimental bunny that I am, I tried every little thing – and did not regret a single second! And when you’re done with all your relaxing, the One & Only Spa provides body wash, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hair brushes, hair straighteners, shaving kits, dental kits, mouth wash … you get the idea.
Visiting the One & Only Spa was one of the true highlights of, well, my life, really. I was absolutely in awe every second I spent there, fell in love with every little aspect, and, upon leaving, grinned from ear to ear for the rest of the day. Yes, visiting the spa may be pricey for the average Capetonian, but it is worth every single cent spent …
For more information on the One & Only Spa, visit their official website here or check out the treatments available here. Not all body and beauty treatments include access to the full spa and Relax Lounge experience. Please make sure you double-check this when making your appointment!
Thank you Tammy and Ashleigh for organising this day out for me. I couldn’t be more thankful!
