Perfect Share Winter Special at Den Anker
As winter has well and truly set here in Cape Town, the search for cosy dining spots has begun. Whether you’re looking to have a romantic date, a catch up with a friend, or just a delicious meal with a spectacular view, then look no further than Den Anker. I had the chance to sample their Perfect Share winter special with Benike and I was very impressed.
The Perfect Share promotion offers a choice of three main course meals to share – Fish and Chips (R185), 2kg of their Signature Mussels (R235), or Bone in Sirloin (R295.) All of these dishes are served with classic Belgian pommes frites chips and the choice of either two glasses of Jordan Chameleon wine or their own Anker Brew beer. This promotion will be available throughout winter so don’t miss out.
Stunning views and excellent service
There is a common misconception that the V&A Waterfront is full of overpriced restaurants, with average food, looking to take advantage of innocent tourists. Even I usually tend to avoid the area as I assume it will be crowded and disappointing. Well, after my exceptional experience at Den Anker, I have definitely changed my mind.
As I walked into the restaurant, it felt warm, cosy and inviting. I also loved the interesting décor; the bar is made out of an upside down boat to tie into the harbour’s nautical look and feel. The breath-taking view of Table Mountain covered in a cloth of cloud automatically caught my eye. Even as a Cape Town local, I’m still blown away by this city’s natural beauty time and time again. The incredible staff really looked after us and didn’t miss a beat to ensure we were taken care of all evening. They even gave us rather stylish serviette bibs to make sure we didn’t get our clothes dirty.
Belgian specialties to start
Being in a Belgian restaurant, I couldn’t resist trying some of their local delicacies. So for starters I had the 1/2kg pot of Mussels a la Crème, which was a very good portion size. The large mussels from Saldanha Bay were cooked in a delicious onion, celery, parsley and cream sauce. I was thankful for the bread rolls to mop up the lovely sauce. I also tried the Lobster Bisque, which was a hearty soup full of flavour and the ideal dish to warm you up in the winter.
Food tastes better when shared
For our main course we shared the Bone in Sirloin steak and chips, which was beautifully presented on a wooden board with two glasses of Jordan Chameleon red. The wine was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with plummy flavours and a dark peppery finish, which went down really well with the meat.
The sharing portion was not huge but after having half a kilo of mussels as a starter it was a good size to share. The meat was tenderly cooked to perfection and served with crispy thin cut fries. The highlight for me was the tasty mushroom and peppercorn sauces, guaranteed crowd pleasers for any sauce lover. Whether it was the wonderful food or the great company, I think there is definitely something true about the fact that food tastes better when shared.
Hot Chocolate Heaven
After our meal the waiter offered me a coffee but instead I asked for a Hot Chocolate. I’m so glad that I did; Belgians really know how to make a good hot choc. Den Anker served up a hot cup of milk with a small bowl of Belgian chocolates. As I dropped each chocolate into the hot milk, it slowly dissolved into melted chocolatey milk – absolutely divine.
Obviously I also nibbled a few of the Belgian chocolates on their own, so you can make it as chocolatey or milky as you like. Another nice touch was the Speculoos biscuit on the side, which tasted like a Christmas brandy snap and was an amazing end to the meal.
Try Out Den Anker’s Perfect Share
The Perfect Share is a great winter special if you’re looking for a good value meal with a cosy atmosphere and an amazing view of the mountain. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at Den Anker. I will definitely be going back for another hot chocolate this winter.
