Come Wine With Us at Fork
Come Wine With Us is a genius concept that brings together like-minded individuals with a passion for great food and even better wine. On a cold winter’s evening I attended their recent event, showcasing Fork Pinchos and the delightful drinks provided by Alto Wines.
All in all it was a lovely evening where I met some great people, was treated to some very tasty tapas, and discovered yet another great local wine producer.
Music and Mingling
On the cosy top floor of Fork, we were welcomed in with Alto’s very nice MCC Brut, served with some breadsticks and sweet beetroot and carrot hummus to warm up our appetites.
The highlight of the evening for me was the live acoustic music from the talented band Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions. The live guitar created a wonderful ambience and the random seating plan ensured friendships were forged throughout the night. This was helped along by the sharing style of the tapas menu, one of my favourite kinds of meals, and a great way to interact and get to know the others around the table.
Before tucking into our meal, the Alto winemaker talked us through the vineyard’s 100-year history and expressed his desire to provide an intimate wine tasting experience there; whether you wish to sample a glass, bottle, or case! Having only red cultivars on the farm, they really are experts in red wine.
We started off with the Alto Rouge, a blend of 5 varieties in one and a very good house wine in my opinion. Although it is quite acidic, it has a beautiful bouquet and I picked up notes of chocolate amongst the smokey aftertaste. The food pairing for this wine was named Fire as it featured braai-inspired tapas dishes.
The Flame-Grilled Chicken Mini Burgers with homemade BBQ sauce and caramelised onions were the perfect bite-sized portion. However, the show-stopper for me was the Grilled Beef Fillet on Croutons and Mushrooms with crisp onion rings and a red wine jus. The textures and flavours were beautifully balanced, plus the beef was cooked rare and juicy, just how I like it!
Next up was the Salt-inspired seafood and wine pairing, featuring the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon. Stellenbosch really is Cab country, so of course it didn’t disappoint. But as they grow their grapes on cooler slopes of the valley, it has a distinctly different flavour.
I was completely blown away by the incredible Seared Tuna with Tatsoi Salad. I loved the flavour combinations of the Asian coriander and guacamole on top. It was so fresh! In comparison, I found the Deep-Fried Calamari with lime aioli on crispy fried potato nests very underwhelming. I think I would have preferred the calamari without the potato nest, as it was all a bit too oily for me.
My favourite food pairing of the evening was the Alto Shiraz with the smoke-inspired dishes. To me the Shiraz is the most drinkable wine and it really complemented the Home-Smoked Roasted Pork Belly with a gorgeous mustard and parsley crust. The perfectly round Deep-Fried Goat Cheese balls on crackers with port onion marmalade were a real winner with some great textures. I also thought the creaminess of the cheese worked with the Shiraz’s acidity nicely.
Food Journeys and Mooi Wines
To end off the evening, we tasted Homemade Dark Chocolate Truffles. These were super rich but went down perfectly with my final glass of red wine. In the words of Alto winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen, the wines were not just ‘nice’, they were ‘mooi’. Beautiful and full of character!
Likewise, the Fork tapas dishes were truly a whole meal in a bite, combining starch, protein, sauce and everything in one go. A truly wonderful food journey, which was made all the more enjoyable by sharing it with other food and wine lovers.
